Assistant Research Officer (Molecular Biology And Genomics)

We are seeking anAssistant Research Officerfor aone-yearTIBA (Tackling Infections to Benefit Africa) fundedRapid Impact Projectaimed at developing capacity for whole genome sequencing using the Oxford Nanopore Technology. This project aims to improve on the surveillance and diagnostic capacity for emerging infections with special focus on the SARS-CoV-2 and the associated COVID-19 disease. The candidate will work with the team to develop local capacity for portable sequencing within KWTRP and equipping select National Public Health Laboratories with portable sequencing technology. We envision that this will boost the region’s capacity to respond to infectious diseases emergencies through genomics.

Responsibilities

Research
To implement, optimize and troubleshoot viral pathogen sequencing protocols by providing both wet-lab and basic sequence analysis support

To provide molecular diagnostic screening for a range of virus targets of human health importance

To manage and update sample flows through the molecular diagnostic pipeline

To assemble viral sequence contigs from raw sequencing reads

To perform preliminary phylogenetic analyses, produce and present the results

To contribute to development of scientific manuscripts
