Job Summary
We are looking for a compassionate and dedicated Oncology Nurse to join our cancer care team. The ideal candidate will have experience in providing specialized care to cancer patients, including administering chemotherapy, managing treatment side effects, and offering emotional support. The Oncology Nurse will play a crucial role in the care continuum, working closely with oncologists and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive and personalized care to patients undergoing cancer treatment.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Assessment & Care Planning
Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients with cancer, including physical, psychological, and social needs.
Collaborate with the healthcare team to develop individualized care plans for patients undergoing treatment.
Monitor patient progress and adjust care plans as necessary, ensuring a holistic approach to patient care.
Administration of Treatments
Prepare and administer chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and other oncology treatments safely and effectively.
Monitor patients for adverse reactions to treatments and take immediate action if complications arise.
Educate patients and families about their treatment plans, medication schedules, and possible side effects.
Symptom Management & Support
Provide pain management and symptom relief for patients experiencing side effects from cancer treatments.
Offer emotional support to patients and their families, helping them cope with the physical and psychological challenges of cancer.
Educate patients on self-care strategies, nutrition, and other ways to manage symptoms at home.
Collaboration & Coordination
Work closely with oncologists, radiologists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
Assist in scheduling follow-up appointments, diagnostic tests, and other necessary services.
Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care plans and treatment adjustments.
Documentation & Record Keeping
Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including treatment administration, patient progress, and side effect management.
Ensure that all documentation complies with hospital protocols, legal requirements, and ethical standards.
Participate in audits and reviews to ensure quality care and continuous improvement in the oncology department.
Patient Education & Advocacy
Educate patients and their families on the nature of their cancer, treatment options, and potential outcomes.
Advocate for patient needs, ensuring they receive appropriate care, information, and resources.
Provide guidance on community resources, support groups, and other services to help patients navigate their cancer journey.
Qualifications & Requirements
Education:
Diploma or Degree in Nursing (Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred).
Current and valid nursing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
Experience:Minimum of 2 years of experience in oncology nursing or a related field.
Certification in Oncology Nursing is an added advantage.
Experience with chemotherapy administration and cancer patient care.
Skills:Strong assessment and critical thinking skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide compassionate care.
Proficiency in administering complex medication regimens and using electronic health records (EHR).
Ability to educate and support patients and families through the cancer treatment process.
