Key roles & responsibilities
Professionally anchor newscasts by delivering news that is clear and concise for viewers, while providing appropriate unscripted content. The material will be both pre-recorded and live pieces.
Complete topical news promotion for use on-air and with other partners in a timely fashion that meets daily deadlines
Identifying potential interviewees, briefing them, preparing interview questions, and conducting both live and recorded interviews
Update website and social media with newscasts or news stories
Participate in public appearances and community events when called upon
Developing and maintaining useful contacts and relations with news sources;
Understanding and complying with media law and industry codes of conduct.
Identifying newsworthy events, attending, writing and packaging stories prior to broadcast
Delivering scripted, spontaneous, live and pre-recorded reports on newsworthy events
Interviewing newsmakers, eye witnesses and any other persons of interest in news stories
Writing scripts, summarizing and translating copy for news purposes
Working collaboratively with other members of the reporting and editorial team
Academic and professional/work Experience
Degree in journalism, mass communications, or any other related field or Degree in social science and post-graduate training in journalism or mass communication or a Post Graduate Degree in Journalism
Previous anchoring experience is desired but not compulsory but at least two years of relevant experience in a busy newsroom in a media house covering all or other aspects of news will be an advantage
Essential Competences
Strong on-air presentation with credible delivery and personal style
Excellent written and spoken Luo, English and Kiswahili. The capacity for bilingual reporting will be an added advantage
An edge for news or features, the ability for quick thinking, resilience, personal initiative, and a good memory
Ability to work for long hours and on short notice. Able to handle pressure well as their work is often in LIVE conditions
The ability to think ahead, spot trends, and predict what is critical in high-pressure news broadcasts, and implement the same.
Sound knowledge of the local and international social, political, and economic news-shaping environment
A self-starter who can generate his or her story ideas daily.
Ability to report accurately and impartially.
Ability to work under deadlines and on a flexible schedule that will include evenings and/or weekends is required.
