Responsibilities
Manage the work of the SDG and Environment Statistics Unit in order to implement General Assembly (GA) and UNEA decisions related to SDG and environment monitoring by developing the strategic approach to the work of the Unit aimed to deliver the relevant mandates of UNEP in a context of sustainable development, and the triple planetary crisis, and supervise the staff to implement the relevant activities.
Oversee the preparation of project documents, Memoranda of Understanding, planning, coordinating and mobilizing resources to implement programmes and activities related to SDG and environment Statistics. Working with partner institutions and networks of experts, implementing methods and procedures to collect, validate, report and analyze data and provide insight to identify trends of environmental conditions as an element for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
Under the guidance of the supervisor, represent UNEP in the UN Statistical System.
Coordinate briefings, progress reports, and technical documentation regarding the work programme for presentation to UNEA, commissions, technical meetings, and expert groups. •Develop and coordinate global and regional technical and expert co-operation networks comprising scientific institutions, governmental, inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations in UN regions, as mechanisms for co-operation and consultation for the production of global and regional statistical analysis and methodological work.
Maintain close liaison and co-operation within the field of responsibility throughout UNEP, strategic partners and relevant national and international organizations and programmes.
Liaise with the UN system agencies and with other international and non-governmental organizations and national focal points with respect to SDG and environment statistics activities, plans and directs technical advisory activities for national capacity building through missions, consultations, and training workshops and broker partnerships and collaboration.
Prepare and organize intergovernmental, inter-agency and expert meetings required to implement the work of the Unit and of the Branch; Participate in international scientific advisory groups and speak at seminars, symposia and other meetings.
Plan, organize, and manage staff; plan and discuss individual work programmes with staff and evaluate their performance.
Oversee the implementation of the programme of work and budget planning, reporting and evaluation. Assume the overall leadership and management of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and Environment Statistics Unit and oversee and be accountable for the implementation of the Programme of Work and budget planning, reporting and evaluation.
Leads team members efforts to collect and analyze data and provides insight to identify trends or patterns for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
Ensures that everyone can discover, access, integrate and share the data they need.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
Advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in environmental science, statistics, mathematics, economics, information systems or natural resources management or a related field is required.
A first level university degree with a combination an additional two years of professional and academic qualifications may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, or data science programs is desirable
Work Experience
A minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible experience in environmental management or resource management or related area is required.
Experience in the supervision, collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of statistical data is required.
Proven experience of progressive responsibility for environmental assessment at international or regional level in the last five years is required.
Experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
